Research Use Notice

IN TRUTH is running two pieces of research. This notice explains both, so you can decide about each separately.

About this notice

Peace Index Research

Exploring what happens physiologically when large numbers of people enter a state of peace together.

The HEARTS study

A closer look at how emotional wellbeing relates to nervous system activity, using standard wellbeing questionnaires.

Register interest — how it works

Taking part in either is entirely optional. You can use IN TRUTH, and join the Global Peace Activation, without joining either. Nothing changes about your app experience if you decline.

If anything here is unclear, email research@intruth.io before you agree.

Who we are

IN TRUTH is a subsidiary organization of Love Out Loud, PBC, 1000 Sutter St, #345, San Francisco, CA 94133, USA. Love Out Loud, PBC is the data controller for the information you provide.

How you choose

When you opt in to the Global Peace Activation in the app, you’ll see two separate choices. Both are unticked by default, and you can continue without ticking either.

Consent

This is a consent. If you tick it, we begin using your data as described below.

Email me when the HEARTS study opens

Not a consent

This is not a consent, and not an enrollment. It means we will contact you when the study opens. No study data is collected from you in the meantime.

You can change either choice at any time by emailing research@intruth.io.

Part oneOpen now

Peace Index Research

What we are trying to find out

On 8 August 2026, people across many countries will take part in the Global Peace Activation together. We want to explore what that looks like in the body — whether measurable patterns appear in the nervous system when large numbers of people intentionally enter a state of peace at the same time.

This is exploratory. We are looking for patterns, not testing a treatment or a hypothesis we have already formed.

What taking part involves

Nothing beyond what you are already doing in the app. We use:

  • Wearable measurements from around the activation period — heart rate, heart rate variability, sleep and activity — collected through your device provider’s official connection
  • Journal entries you choose to write, and the emotions the app identifies in them

We do not ask you to complete any questionnaires or set aside any time.

Who can take part

You need an IN TRUTH account and to be 18 or older.

A connected wearable lets us include physiological measurements. If you do not have one, you can still take part through your journal entries alone.

Part twoNot open yet — register interest

The HEARTS study

Heart rate variability, Emotion And Real-world Tracking Study

What we are trying to find out

Consumer wearables can measure signals related to the autonomic nervous system, such as heart rate variability. What is less well understood is how those signals relate to how people actually feel over time. The HEARTS study will combine wearable data with standard wellbeing questionnaires to build a clearer picture.

What taking part will involve

Around one hour of your time across four weeks:

Background questionnaire
How longAbout 15 minutes
WhenOnce, at the start
Wellbeing questionnaires
How longAbout 15 minutes each
WhenThree times across the four weeks
Wearable data
How longNo time required
WhenShared automatically across the four weeks

The background questionnaire asks about you — things like your age, where you live, your general health, and your experience with wearables and meditation or similar practices.

The wellbeing questionnaires are the PHQ-8 and GAD-7, two short questionnaires used widely in research. They ask how often you have experienced things like low mood, poor sleep, worry or restlessness over the past two weeks. You can skip any question you do not want to answer.

These are research measures, not diagnostic tests. Your answers will not tell you whether you have a condition, and we will not interpret them for you.

Who can take part

An IN TRUTH account, a connected supported wearable, and 18 or older. Unlike Peace Index Research, this study needs continuous wearable data, so a device is required.

Why it is not open yet

We are seeking approval from an independent research ethics committee.

Registering interest is not the same as joining. It means we will contact you when the study opens, and at that point you will see the full details and decide whether to take part. No study data is collected from you in the meantime, and you can remove yourself from the interest list at any time by emailing research@intruth.io.

Part threePeace Index Research + HEARTS

The rest applies to both

Taking part is voluntary

You choose whether to join. You can:

  • Decline and still use the app normally
  • Stop at any point, for any reason, without telling us why
  • Skip individual questions
  • Disconnect your wearable at any time

There is no penalty for stopping, and you will not lose access to anything.

To withdraw, or to have your data deleted: email research@intruth.io. We will delete the data you have provided, except for anything already published or already included in an analysis that cannot be separated out. We will tell you if that applies.

What we do with your data

We use your information only for the research described in this notice, and for related research into emotional wellbeing and physiological signals.

Your data is stored in a secure database in Amazon Web Services, encrypted in transit and at rest. Access is limited to the IN TRUTH research team.

We separate your identifying details (name, email, account ID) from your research data and replace them with a code. The research team works with the coded data. The key linking the code to you is held separately, so that we can honour deletion requests.

Important: because we keep that link, your research data is pseudonymised, not fully anonymous. Fully anonymous data cannot be deleted on request, because there would be no way to find it. If we later produce a fully anonymised dataset — with the link permanently removed — we will say so, and that data can no longer be withdrawn.

We do not

  • Sell your data
  • Use it for advertising or marketing
  • Share it with your employer, your insurer, or anyone else in your life
  • Use it to make any decision that affects you individually

We keep research data for 10 years after each study ends, then delete it or retain it only in fully anonymised form.

Legal basis

We rely on your explicit consent to process health-related information for research. You can withdraw that consent at any time, which stops any further processing.

Registering interest in the HEARTS study is handled separately, as a consent to be contacted. Withdrawing from the interest list does not affect any research consent, and vice versa.

Where your data goes

Participants take part from many countries. Your data is transferred to and stored in our secure databases in Amazon Web Services.

Who else sees it

The IN TRUTH research team
Coded data — no names or contact details
Our technology providers
Data stored on their systems under contract, not used for their own purposes
The public, in published findings
Grouped results only — never anything identifying you

We may publish what we find, in scientific journals, at conferences, or in reports. Published findings will describe patterns across groups of people. You will not be identifiable.

Risks and benefits

Risks are low, but real. Answering questions about your mood and stress can bring up difficult feelings. There is always some residual risk when personal data is stored, though we take the precautions described above.

There is no direct benefit to you. You will still see your own data in the app as normal, but you will not receive a personal analysis or any clinical interpretation from either study.

We cannot give you medical advice. IN TRUTH is not a medical device. Nothing in the app or in this research diagnoses, treats, or monitors any health condition. We do not review your responses individually, and we will not contact you about them. If you have concerns about your mental or physical health, please speak to a doctor or a qualified professional. If you need support urgently, contact your local emergency services or a crisis line in your country — findahelpline.com lists services worldwide.

Your rights

Depending on where you live, you may have the right to:

  • Ask what data we hold about you and get a copy
  • Correct information that is wrong
  • Ask us to delete your data
  • Object to or restrict how we use it
  • Withdraw your consent at any time
  • Complain to your national data protection authority

To exercise any of these, email research@intruth.io.
